Positive affirmations are powerful statements generally used for self-improvement. Sometimes, they are used to achieve some goal that may be work-related or personal or to move from being a pessimist to an optimist or any other such objective.
But a lot of people are often wrong about using them. So instead of being helpful, they tend to do more harm than good.
Before making affirmations for yourself, you need to know what things you should keep in mind to make them work for you. There are really simple things to keep the focus on.
Let’s start with the basics.
12 Steps To Make Affirmations Work Faster For You
1. How Should You Construct An Affirmation?
If you want your affirmation work for you then make one that contains
- What you want to achieve, what you desire
- What will you feel if you achieve it
So focus on these two things when creating an affirmation.
Take this example, I am enjoying working as the best salesperson for my company.
2. Avoid Using Negative Words
Affirmations play a role in the self-transformation process so give them a good thought. Surely you are making a positive affirmation, so you don’t have to focus on negative words. In fact, your affirmation shouldn’t include any negative words not even “not.”
Try to combat your negative thoughts or fears with short positive statements. For this to happen, focus on the outcome by not doing what you are thinking of not doing.
You are thinking about not doing something right? Is it Smoking? No? Procrastination? Still no? Okay, whatever you want to change. Focus on results and make it part of your affirmation.
For example, you don’t want to procrastinate anymore.
Generally, you will make an affirmation like this.
“I will not procrastinate, I’m always embarrassed because of it.”
But remove not and also embarrassing thing and instead make an affirmation like this.
“I am happy that I complete my work on time and make others satisfied.”
3. Turn It Into A Mantra
It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to say it during meditation, but that too is effective. Just like you repeat a mantra, repeat your affirmations.
Mantra and affirmations are often taken as interchangeable, but there is a difference. Mantras do not usually have some deep meaning but affirmations have and they are impactful.
4. Repeat Your Affirmations Frequently
To make them work repeat your affirmations 3 to 5 times daily and as frequently as you can.
- Make a note of all the affirmations and set it as wallpaper on your laptop and phone so that you see them whenever you use a laptop or phone and repeat out loud whenever you do so. It won’t let you lose your focus and it won’t let you demotivate.
- Make tech work for you if you are too lazy to remember. Just use an app like ‘ThinkUp’ to remind you to repeat your affirmations
4. In The Present Tense
Don’t confuse your subconscious by making goals with no perspective of achieving them. Make your affirmations in the present tense and make your mind start working now because it’ll make you believe that you already are what you want to be so your subconscious will try to prove it by making you more like it.
The simple way is to use “now” or “I am” instead of ”I will.”
5. Connect An Emotion To It
Add a feeling to your affirmation as it will energize you and motivate you. If emotion is lacking in your affirmations, it’s very likely it won’t work for you so try to associate a feeling and name it in your affirmation.
You can use “I’m happy,” “I’m satisfied,” “I’m grateful,” etc.
6. Be Persistent
Don’t try to make it work overnight. Some people start improving in a day or two or a week or two, but generally average people like me take some time. So if you are like me, don’t overburden yourself and let it work slowly. It may even take a month or so before you start noticing any improvement.
7. Keep Track Of Your Progress
Keep a record from day one and write down your improvement every week.
There is another way to record yourself in front of the camera and discuss what you feel has changed or improved in you.
I feel like keeping a diary is more convenient, and I can go through pages more easily whenever I want to as compared to videos. But you can do what suits you best. It is important because when you see yourself changing positively, it will boost your courage and motivation to continue that journey.
8. Say Them Out Loud
Don’t be embarrassed to repeat them aloud. Of course, I’m not suggesting saying them out loud at your workplace or school but in front of the mirror in your room. Even if you are a busy person or you want to believe that you are a busy person like me, you can still do it. How? When? When doing makeup, while brushing your teeth. Man, you’re already in front of the mirror. Don’t stay quiet just do it.
9. Record Them And Listen To Them
This is effective when you are outside and can’t say your affirmations out loud. You don’t have to. Just record your affirmations and listen to them while driving or while eating. Ha, it’s a joke. You don’t have to listen to it while eating, give yourself a break.
10. Believe in it
You have to believe that this affirmation thing is backed up with scientific proofs. It’s not like magic out of nowhere. Believe it before you start otherwise your mind won’t respond positively.
It’s important because affirmation is going to make you believe in something and it can’t happen if the process itself is not trusted. You agree, right?
11. Find A Buddy
Do you already have one? Great. You don’t have, then find one. Are you wondering why do you need a buddy in the middle of discussing affirmations?
Well, I’m talking about that trusted buddy who is going to repeat your affirmations in front of you to remind you.
And who won’t spill your secrets in front of everybody. Stay away from such buddies. I mean the latter ones. So a buddy will be a helping hand to achieve what you want to.
12. Set A Schedule
Try to repeat your affirmations at similar times every day. It’s more like training your mind. Has anyone ever told you that this is a very powerful method to train your mind?
Whenever I had exams, if I had a paper in the morning session, I used to study that subject in the morning for at least one month before paper. How it works is pretty simple. When you do so your mind gets used to it and prepares itself for that task every day at that time. It worked for me and it’ll work for you. So set a schedule.
Affirmations are an effective tool to set your mind to achieve your goals only if you are using them in the right way. So use these tips and best of luck for your objectives.
